Del Mar Weekly Report (Nov 8-10)
Mar Recap for Friday (11-8-19)
Fast main track and firm turf course. No front running winners on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were a front runner at five panels, a midpack closer at 8.5 furlongs, and a last-to-first closer at one mile (rail at 18 feet).
Tiago Pereira and Bill Spawr teamed up for two wins.
The $2 Pick 6 pool was $51,318, and nobody had all six winners. The 5 out of 6 consolation payoff was $5,874.80. There will be a Pick 6 carryover of $27,416 when live racing resumes Nov. 9, and the single ticket jackpot carryover stands at $5,875.
Kathryn Crosby Stakes Recap (11-8-19) – Winner: Wicked Old Fashion ($67.80)
The pace was swift early, and this turf route fell apart late. La Sardane and Lostintranzlation were the early instigators, and they opened up by 8+ lengths after a half-mile. The writing was on the wall and the lead started to diminish. Wicked Old Fashion and Super Patriot were last and next-to-last for much of the running, and they closed in tandem to finish noses apart on the line. Excellent Sunset also rallied, and she was another head back in 3rd. Curlin’s Journey stalked and tried to sneak up the inside, and she was another head back in 4th in the blanket 4-horse photo. Lostintranzlation was a tiring 5th, followed by La Sandane, Free My Soul, and very disappointing post time favorite Poster Girl (stalked/faded badly).
Nov. 8 Claims: Race 2 – Restless Rambler ($40k, Mark Glatt).
Del Mar Recap for Saturday (11-9-19)
Fast main track and firm turf course. One dueling front running winner at six furlongs on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were a front runner at one mile, a closer at one mile, a stalker at one mile, and a stalker/presser at one mile (rail at 18 feet).
Hat trick for Drayden Van Dyke. Riding double for Heriberto Figueroa. Training double for Richard Baltas.
The $2 Pick 6 pool was $176,710, and multiple tickets with all six winners paid $2,090.20. The 5 out of 6 consolation payoff was $25.00. The single ticket jackpot carryover stands at $26,104.
Let It Ride Stakes Recap (11-9-19) – Winner: Bob and Jackie ($6.60)
How did Proud Pedro not win this? I keep watching the replay and it is amazing that he did not get the bob. Yep, the bob went to Bob and Jackie! This was a competitive 5-horse affair, and I was ecstatic to get 9-2 on Proud Pedro. Golden Birthday and returnee Bob and Jackie set the pace. Dueling and Ocean Fury stalked, and Proud Pedro trailed. That is the way it looked until the stretch run. Bob and Jackie put away Golden Birthday, and Proud Pedro was rolling on the outside. It looked like the latter got up in the very late stages, but he ended up missing by a very short nose. Ocean Fury was a nose better than Dueling in the battle for 3rd, and Golden Birthday faded to last.
Nov. 9 Claims: None.
Del Mar Recap for Sunday (11-10-19)
Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (6f, 5.5f). The winning turf course running styles were a midpack stalker at a mile and an eighth, a presser/stalker at five panels, an inside stalker at one mile, and an outside stalker at one mile (rail at 18 feet).
Hat trick for Abel Cedillo. Training doubles for Peter Eurton and Peter Miller.
The $2 Pick 6 pool was $154,010, and tickets with all six winners paid $1,473 each. The 5 out of 6 consolation payoff was $14.60. The single ticket jackpot carryover stands at $43,735.
Kathryn Crosby Stakes Recap (11-10-19) – Winner: Leucothea
Leucothea looked much the best on paper and made very short work of this group.
Biddy Duke rushed up from the inside post to take command early, but Leucothea
was right on her heels after a less than perfect beginning. The latter was just
cruising out there under Abel Cedillo, and she took over after a half-mile and
extended her lead to 3-1/2 lengths when all was said and done. This was as easy
as it looked. Orquidias Biz rallied from last to gain the place under Mike
Smith. Stellar Sound was overbet for Bob Baffert, and she was best of the rest
in 3rd. The other three runners were well strung out. Roadrunner’s Honor (4th)
was 16 lengths in front of Spitefulness (5th), and that one was 7+ clear of
fading last place finisher Biddy Duke.
Nov. 10 Claims: Race 1 – Octopus ($32k, John Sadler). Race 2 – Big Base ($8k, Peter Miller). Race 6 – Midnight Special ($20k, Victor Garcia). Race 7 – Murad Khan ($40k, Peter Miller).
