Kentucky Oaks 2020 Prep Races
The Kentucky Oaks 2020 points race series is back in action for the first time since the Fantasy Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park on May 1. Swiss Skydiver captured the last two Oaks points races (GP Oaks, Fantasy), and she is favored to make it three straight graded route wins against three opponents in the Santa Anita Oaks (G2) at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, June 6.
Kentucky Oaks Points Race Preview
Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks (6-6-20)
SA 5 (G2 Santa Anita Oaks, 8.5f)
Primary – #3 SPEECH, #1 Swiss Skydiver
Secondary – #2 Merneith, #5 Regal Beauty
Wagers: #3 to win, Exacta 3-1
Comments: This race is down to four runners following the defection of Smiling Shirlee. #3 Speech (8-5) fired in all five outings and has earned some quality speed figures. Flavien Prat takes the call, she fired a local bullet for this May 23, and a tactical trip is expected. She ran a big race to miss by a neck at Oaklawn May 2, and the top two finishers were well clear of the rest. She might be able to beat morning line favorite #1 Swiss Skydiver (6-5). The latter is sharp and versatile, and her numbers jumped up in her last two graded route victories. She is clearly the one to deny. #2 Merneith (2-1) rolled by ten lengths in her maiden sprint win in the slop at Oaklawn April 19. She reconnects with Drayden Van Dyke and is probably going straight to the front. #5 Regal Beauty (10-1) attended moderate splits and cruised to an easy flat mile maiden win May 17.
Kentucky Oaks 2020 News
The other Oaks points race scheduled for June 6 is the Grade 3 Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs (race 10), and Edgeway might be the one to beat in this extended sprint. John Sadler’s filly owns early-pressing versatility and Tyler Baze should have options from the outside post. She ran well in all three starts at six panels. Morning line favorite Four Graces is 2-for-2 at seven furlongs and should be forwardly placed. The 8-horse field also includes Clivitty, Bayerness, Ain’t No Elmers, Magic Dance, Lady Glamour, and Laurel Park stakes winner Naughty Thoughts.
Altaf is a filly to watch for Chad Brown. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, out of a Smart Strike dam, looked razor sharp in her flat mile maiden win under the Twin Spires on May 23. A dirt route stakes race is probably in her near future.
