Kentucky Oaks 2020 Points Race Recaps
Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) Recap (3-28-20) – Winner: Swiss Skydiver ($20.20)
This was an oddly run race. Multiple contenders had early-pressing speed (Lake Avenue, Lucrezia, Spice Is Nice, Tonalist’s Shape), but Lake Avenue and Lucrezia were the only ones from that bunch to secure a forward position. I thought Swiss Skydiver was a live exotics contender from off the pace, but nobody else wanted the lead, so Paco Lopez took advantage and sent Ken McPeek’s filly straight to the front. Lucrezia chased, and 105-1 outsider Bahan Girl was behind those two, followed by Lake Avenue. There was absolutely no movement in this affair. Lucrezia tried to go after Swiss Skydiver at the six furlong mark, but the latter spurted away in the lane and scored by 3-1/2 lengths. Lucrezia just held 2nd over Lake Avenue, and Bajan Girl was well clear of the rest in 4th. That brings us to 5th place finisher Spice Is Nice. She was somehow in 11th place after the opening half-mile, and was wide and going nowhere fast. She did manage to pass six rivals in a race dominated by speed horses, and adding blinkers would not be the worst move in the world. Dream Marie was next, followed by Tonalist’s Shape, Spartanka, Mrs. S, Inveterate, Sunset Promise, and Addilyn.
