Daytona Stakes (G3) Recap (5-25-19) – Winner: Eddie Haskell ($3.60)
Five panel turf specialist Eddie Haskell looked almost impossible to beat on paper, and he did not disappoint in real time under Kent Desormeaux. He battled with What’sontheagenda early, let that one go, reengaged in the lane, and edged clear to score by a bit less than two lengths. Kathanka could not quite go with the top two and ended up a solid 3rd on a new surface and at a distance shorter than his best. Brandothebartender always tries hard but found this distance a tad sharp and this group a bit too good. Blameitonthelaw, Buckys Pick, and Horse Greedy completed the order of finish.
Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2) Recap (5-25-19) – Winner: Marckie’s Water ($6.60)
This was the coming out party for Marckie’s Water. The solid CA-bred won an optional claimer last time and stepped up and finished powerfully in this ten furlong graded affair. This was not the deepest graded event but he looked good outfinishing highly regarded Mandella trainee United. Those two were better than the rest, and the winner was especially sharp in the late stages. Ashleyluvssugar nipped Prime Attraction and Morse Code for 3rd, and Ya Gotta Wanna and Tizzarunner trailed.
Triple Bend Stakes (G2) Recap (5-25-19) – Winner: Air Strike ($27.40)
The pace was a bit slow to develop after Cistron bobbled at the start but he recovered quickly and shot up inside The Hardest Way to show the way. He put away his pace rival and everyone else and had a clear lead in the lane, but Air Strike was under a full head of steam and got up late to win by a head under Norberto Arroyo Jr. Stablemates Nero and American Anthem were 3rd and 4th, followed by Majestic Eagle, All Out Blitz, Law Abidin Citizen, and The Hardest Way.

Summertime Oaks (G2) Recap (5-26-19) – Winner: My Majestic Rose ($13.80)
Churchill shipper My Majestic Rose stole the show in this graded route for 3-year-old fillies. She stalked early runners Sneaking Out and Flor de La Mar, and edged past the former in late stretch to win by a 1/2 length. The top two were well clear of Colonial Creed. Bizwhacks was a distant 4th and Flor de La Mar faded to finish a distant last in a strung out field.
Monrovia Stakes (G2) Recap (5-26-19) – Winner: S Y Sky ($6.20)
This race was taken off the turf and run at five furlongs on the fast main track. Belvoir Bay was terribly overbet. This was her first start since Dubai, and she was hardly a slam dunk, especially on dirt. S Y Sky was definitely the right one to play in this spot. The very consistent CA-bred was razor sharp with tactical speed, and she was just as good on dirt. Belvoir Bay broke slow and dueled between horses, but S Y Sky had her number and scored by a bit less than a length. The beaten favorite put away Lady Suebee and easily finished 2nd over that rival. Spectator was 4th, followed by Flammetta, Rocky Policy, and Painting Corners.
May 26 Claims: Race 1 – Little No Way ($25k, Alfredo Marquez).
Santa Anita Recap for Monday (5-27-19)

Gamely Stakes (G1) Recap (5-27-19) – Winner: Vasilika ($4.20)
Vasilika just keeps on winning. She was outstanding last year, and ran her 2019 record to 4-for-4 with a length victory over Rymska. There are no sure things in racing, but Vasilika comes very close. Ahimsa set the pace and held 3rd over Elysea’s World. Meal Ticket, Streak of Luck, Ollie’s Candy, and Causeforcommotion trailed.
Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1) Recap (5-27-19) – Winner: Vino Rosso ($10.20)
Gift Box was the deserving favorite in this mile and a quarter event, and he ran extremely well without winning. Blitzkrieg and Gift Box hooked up for the first six furlongs or so, and the latter did all of the pace dirty work while working very hard early. Vino Rosso stalked outside and went right after Gift Box with about two furlongs to go. Those two separated themselves from the rest and Vino Rosso gradually increased his winning margin to three-quarters of a length. Gift Box ran too good to lose while 5+ clear of show finisher Lone Sailor. Mongolian Groom was 4th, followed by Higher Power, Core Beliefs, and turf specialist Blitzkrieg.
Shoemaker Mile (G1) Recap (5-27-19) – Winner: Bolo ($67.80)
Bolo was able to get out there and control the tempo, and he pulled off a 32-1 stunner in this flat mile turf affair. River Boyne stalked the pace and edged late runner Bowies Hero for the place, and Sharp Samurai chased and just held 4th in his first start since last fall. Catapult stalked wide and finished 5th, and was followed by Ohio, Delta Prince, Le Ken, and Desert Stone (blew the break).
