CTBA Stakes Recap (7-31-19) - Winner: Bulletproof One ($3.00)

Bulletproof One was just plain too fast for her rivals in this CA-bred juvenile filly stakes event at 5.5f. Norberto Arroyo Jr. put the Peter Miller trainee on the lead in 21.64, and that was all she wrote. She was coasting out front following a half-mile in 45.22, and she won by 6+ lengths while stopping the clock in 1:04.70. Unchain Her Heart chased from 2nd throughout, and Wise Rachel flew late to snatch the show away from Cholula Lips. None of Your Biz was 5th, followed by Roses for Laura, Bella Renella, and Acai.

July 31 Claims: Race 1 Grey Lady ($40k, Alfredo Marquez). Race 5 - Tammy痴 Window ($25k, Peter Miller).

Graduation Stakes Recap (8-2-19) - Winner: Big Returns ($4.40)

It was disqualification night at Del Mar, and this was the second race changed by the stewards. Square Deal rallied for the upset win under Norberto Arroyo Jr., but the celebration was very short-lived. He drifted in and bothered solid favorite Big Returns and my top choice Pas de Panique. Those two were placed 1st and 2nd, and Square Deal was demoted to 3rd. Bluegrass Faith dueled and just held 4th over Darnquick, Shady Empire, and Bam Bam Again.

Del Mar Recap for Saturday (8-3-19)

Drayden Van Dyke booted home a pair on turf. Bob Hess Jr. and Andy Mathis both saddled two winners. Rafael Bejarano and Doug O誰eill teamed up for two wins.

The $2 Pick 6 pool was $271,141, and tickets with all six winners paid $24,142.40. The 5 out of 6 consolation payoff was $105.80. The single ticket jackpot carryover stands at $285,325.

Sorrento Stakes (G2) Recap (8-3-19) - Winner: Amalfi Sunrise ($3.40)

Amalfi Sunrise was much the best in this 2-year-old filly dirt sprint. She dueled with stakes winner Comical and put that one away early. She was a couple of lengths in front after a half-mile, and Norberto Arroyo Jr. put her under a hold in the lane. She won by a very easy six lengths. Powerfulattraction got past Amalfi Sunrise痴 stablemate Shedaresthedevil in the final stride to secure the runner-up spot. Shanghai Keely, Princess Mo, and Comical trailed.

Yellow Ribbon Stakes (G2) Recap (8-3-19) - Winner: Beau Recall ($6.00)

Drayden Van Dyke made all the difference in this turf route. He gave late runner Beau Recall a great ride. He put her relatively close to tepid fractions from the inside post. He got tangled up with Lemoona near the far turn, and both lost momentum. In the meantime, Storm the Hill was chugging along up front and almost stole this one under Rafael Bejarano. Beau Recall gathered herself turning for home, found room inside Storm the Hill, and nipped that one in the final jump. Strong favorite Vasilika stalked outside throughout and was another 1/2 length back in 3rd under Julien Leparoux. I think she missed her regular pilot Flavien Prat. Valedictorian chased the pace and ended up 4th, and Elysea痴 World and a troubled Lemoona trailed. The latter lodged an objection again the winner, but it was not allowed. Mario Gutierrez put her in an awkward spot along the inside. He probably sensed the slow fractions and tried to make an early inside move, but there was really nowhere to go. She was bothered by Beau Recall, but the stewards made the right call.

Del Mar Recap for Sunday (8-4-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (5.5f, 6f). The winning turf course running styles were a front runner at five panels, a closer at one mile, and a front runner at 8.5 furlongs (rail at 12 feet).

Ruben Fuentes (dirt sprints) and Flavien Prat both booted home a pair. Bob Baffert saddled two winners.

The $2 Pick 6 pool was $186,373, and tickets with all six winners paid $7,111.80. The 5 out of 6 consolation payoff was $44.60. The single ticket jackpot carryover stands at $306,661.

La Jolla Handicap (G3) Recap (8-4-19) - Winner: Kingly ($18.60)

There were multiple closers entered in this sophomore turf route, and most were exiting the Oceanside Stakes. Surface switcher Kingly was send to the lead and threw down an opening quarter in 22.16. Mario Gutierrez did a great job slowing things down after that. He got his next two quarters in 24.01 and 24.32, and it was basically game over. Neptune痴 Storm gamely chased the winner throughout but could not quite get to him and came up a neck short. The closers never had a chance, and the top two were 3+ in front of show finisher Jasikan. Rijeka went last to 4th, and was followed by Stubbins, Golden Birthday, and King of Speed.

August 4 Claims: Race 4 - Bam Bam Bryan ($25k, Brian Koriner). Race 8 - Wilt ($20k, John F. Martin).
