Santa Anita Park Recap for Thursday (2-7-19)

Good main track and good turf course. Four front running winners on dirt (7f, 8f, 8f, 8f). The winning turf course running styles were an inside stalker at one mile, an outside stalker at one mile, a late runner at a mile and an eighth, and a patient runner at one mile (rail at 20 feet).

Hat trick for Tyler Baze. Riding double for Joel Rosario.

Feb 7 Claims: Race 5 - Oscar Dominguez ($40k, Richard Baltas). Race 7 - Builder ($12.5k, Isidro Tamayo).

Santa Anita Park Recap for Friday (2-8-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners at seven panels on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were a stalker at one mile, a last-to-first closer down the hill, a patient midpack runner at one mile, and an outside stalker at one mile (rail at 10 feet).

Riding double for apprentice Assael Espinoza. Two wins for trainer Vladimir Cerin.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $82,532 and multiple winning tickets paid $3,752.02 each. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $64,519 when live racing resumes Saturday, Feb. 9.

Feb 8 Claims: Race 1 - Runningwscissors ($20k, Manuel Ortiz). Race 3 - Empress of Lov ($16k, Ron Ellis). Race 6 - Red King ($35k, Phil D但mato), Falcone ($35k, Doug O誰eill), Wilshire Dude ($35k, Manuel Ortiz).

Santa Anita Park Recap for Saturday (2-9-19)

Good main track and good turf course. Five front running winners on a speed favoring dirt oval (5.5f, 8f, 6f, 6.5f, 5.5f). The winning turf course running styles were three stalkers at one mile, a stalker at a mile and a quarter, and a downhill stalker.

Simon Callaghan saddled two graded stakes winners on the card.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $211,098 and multiple winning tickets paid $56,382.02 each. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $112,847 when live racing resumes Sunday, Feb. 10.

Feb 9 Claims: Race 1 - Halo Darlin ($20k, Michael Pender). Race 4 - Royal Trump ($35k, Mark Glatt). Race 6 - We Will Re Joyce ($8k, Rafael DeLeon), Cioppino Pasadino ($8k, Brian Koriner). Race 10 - Tanners Pride ($16k O J Jauregui), Saratoga Morning ($16k, John Martin), Zippy Groom ($14k Mark Rheinford), Honeymoonz Over ($16k, Dean Pederson).

Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes Recap (2-9-19) - Winner: Bellafina ($2.20)

Bellafina is clearly one of the better sophomore fillies in the land, but there has always been a question of stamina, and those route questions still linger after today痴 victory. The overwhelming favorite did not have an alert beginning but recovered quickly and Flavien Prat went to the front on the good main track. Mother Mother figured to set the pace but was content to track Bellafina today. The Baffert trainee hounded the chalk throughout but failed to quicken in the lane. Enaya Alrabb stalked inside and gave Bellafina a scare in the lane but the multiple graded stakes winner held sway to win by a bit less than a length. Enaya Alrabb ran a very big race to finish a clear 2nd and is definitely on the upswing for Doug O誰eill. She proved that her head defeat at 40-1 odds in the Starlet (G1) late last year was not a fluke. Calf Moon Bay picked off a tired Mother Mother to complete the trifecta. Tomlin was a distant last.

Grade 3 Thunder Road Stakes Recap (2-9-19) - Winner: True Valour ($25.00)

This was a strange race from a handicapping standpoint, and it got even weirder during the actual running. Desert Stone had a slow start and was basically eliminated after barely taking a step. As expected, Blackjackcat got to the front under Mike Smith, but he has not done anything good since 2017 and retreated to last. Le Ken took the lead after six panels but Ohio was hot on his heels. Strong favorite River Boyne stalked the pace inside under Flavien Prat but had nowhere to go. Meanwhile, True Valour was gaining ground in midstretch and prevailed by a 1/2 length under energetic handling by overseas rider Andrea Atzeni. Ohio held 2nd by a neck over Le Ken, and River Boyne checked in a troubled 4th and would have challenged for the win with a better trip. Desert Stone ended up a length and a half behind River Boyne and Blackjackcat faded to last.

Grade 2 San Marcos Stakes Recap (2-9-19) - Winner: Platinum Warrior ($34.40)

Platinum Warrior was a disappointment in five starts since arriving in the states. He was a group three winner under Shane Foley at a mile and a quarter at the Curragh last spring, and they teamed up again to win by a comfortable 3/4ths of a length today. He stalked the pace, got first run, and blew the race wide open turning for home, and those were the keys to victory. Epical was stepping up in class after a pair of turf route wire jobs and did very well to rally for the place in this tougher spot. Beach View was my value top choice and he rallied wide to just miss 2nd in a rock solid effort. Ya Gotta Wanna was up for 4th and was followed by beaten favorite Chicago Style (Del Mar turf marathon specialist), badly overbet surface switcher Dabster, Unapologetic, Sejo, Flamboyant, India Mantuana, Roman Rosso, Prince of Arabia, and Lucky Soul.

Santa Anita Park Recap for Sunday (2-10-19)

Fast main track and good turf course to start the day. The track was downgraded to wet fast by the fourth race, and the final two downhill sprints were moved to the main track. One front running winner at six furlongs on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were a downhill stalker and a last-to-first winner in a five furlong dash.

No riding or training doubles on Sunday.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $232,337 and multiple winning tickets paid $91.02 each. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $112,846 when live racing resumes Thursday, Feb. 14.

Feb 10 Claims: Race 6 - Carribean Colours (claim voided).

Sweet Life Stakes Recap (2-10-19) - Winner: Apache Princess ($4.60)

This race was originally scheduled for the downhill course. Apache Princess won her last two downhill sprints and was the favorite on the main track. The chalk players were not disappointed. Apache Princess saved ground stalking the pace from the inside post and won by an easy 3-1/4 lengths for Team Desormeaux. Thriving battled on the pace and held 2nd by a nose over Splashy Kisses. Nomizar faded to 4th and Full Eclipse trailed throughout.

San Vicente (G2) Recap (2-10-19) - Winner: Sparky Ville ($16.80)

Coliseum was badly overbet in this extended sprint. His gate woes were on full display in the Sham (G3), and he was off to a slow start again today. Savagery set the pace and was confronted by Coliseum through a half-mile in 44.32. Dessman got first run and opened up turning for home but my value top choice Sparky Ville got off the rail and caught him right on the line to win by a nose. The top two were 6+ clear of Coliseum, and he was 4+ clear of Synthesis. Savagery faded to finish a distant last. Sparky Ville was the best sprinter in this field. Dessman might appreciate more ground in the future. Coliseum is still a work in progress for Baffert. He has talent but is not there mentally.
