Jan 24 Horses To Watch Santa Anita

FOOLISH (January 20) Three year old filly debut runner for Tim Yakteen, was entered for a $62,500 claiming tag on Friday at five and a half on the turf. Off at 4/1 in a field of 8, she broke OK under Prat and was about five off the lead down the back side. She put in a huge move at the ¼ pole to reach contention, then “hung” in the drive in a race she obviously needed. She ended up second in this race and it was a full six lengths back to the third horse. This daughter of Practical Joke is bred to win early and she’s a soon winner for a solid barn.

UNWRITTEN CODE (January 20) Four year old filly for Jorge Periban is razor sharp right now and was shooting for her third consecutive win on Friday when entered for $25,000 in a turf race at five and a half furlongs. This speed ball had stopped in all three previous tries on the lawn, but today she battled on the front end with two other horses, put them away turning for home, and went on to win by five at the wire. She is best on the main track and they won’t write this distance very often on the grass once the turf dries out completely. Nobody dropped the slip to claim her so Periban will take her right up the ladder and she can handle either surface. Wins right back.

TOM’S X S (January 20) Four year old gelding for James Cassidy made start #2 on Friday after an impressive debut 7 weeks ago. Off at 5/2 in this maiden special weight for Cal breds at ¾ on the main, he missed the start completely under Smith and spotted the field four lengths rather quickly. Breaking from the two hole, the jock wheeled him to the outside and he made up good ground around the 3/8 pole, took the lead into the stretch, and though he hung some the final sixteenth, he still won by ¾ at the wire. The race was visually impressive based on the poor start and the five wide trip. His debut was on the turf and he missed by only a neck in a strong performance, so he handles either surface for the low profile Cassidy barn. Up the ladder.
•    LOTTERY PICK (January 21) Four year old gelding for Peter Eurton made just his 2nd start in the last 12 months on Saturday in a maiden claimer with a tag of $50K at a mile on the turf. Off at 5/2 in a field of 9 under Prat, he was in a good tracking position down the back side, rallied to the lead at the top of the lane, and then got nailed late to lose by a half at the wire. It was a good five lengths back to the third horse. His next start will be his 3rd off the layoff and he raced without Lasix today. He wins his next start if Prat rides him back. He was a Turfdom Best Bet on the day and paid $4.00 to place. Be ready.

KISS MY KAT (January 22) Four year old filly for Kristin Mulhall, who had not been to the post since October of 2021, made just the 2nd start of her career on Sunday in a state bred maiden claimer with a tag of $50K at ¾ on the main. She missed the start completely and broke last after working sensationally in the mornings. Curatolo then rushed her up on the inside and she actually had the lead by the half mile pole. She then widened her lead to two into the far turn, had four on the field by the 1/8 pole, but the poor start came back to haunt her late in the race. The jock used her way too early and she hung and tired late to finish second beaten two at the wire by a longshot. If she races back at this level, they won’t beat her next time.
