Kentucky Oaks 2020 Report: March 22

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Kentucky Oaks 2020 will no longer be run on the first Friday in May. The new date for the Oaks is Friday, Sept. 4. More points races will be added to the schedule in the coming weeks and months. Let’s catch up on all the recent action.

The next scheduled Oaks points race is the Gulfstream Park Oaks on Saturday, March 28. Davona Dale 1-2 finishers Tonalist’s Shape and Spice Is Nice are expected to meet again in that contest. The winner will receive 100 Oaks points.

Kentucky Oaks 2020 Points Race Recaps

Busher Invitational Recap (3-7-20) - Winner: Water White ($37.20)

Demoiselle 1-2 finishers Lake Avenue and Maiden were the two favorites in this spot, and Tampa Bay shipper Mo City was the third choice. None of them were around at the finish. Lake Avenue and Persisto battled on the pace, and 13-1 longshot Kansas Kis stalked in 3rd. The latter took over the lead and opened up in the stretch, but Water White emerged from the pack and was steadily gaining. It looked like Kansas Kis might hold on but Water White surged late and got there in the last jump. The winner was cutting back to her preferred distance and I really liked her underneath. She ran a bit better than I thought. Kansas Kis let this one slip away. She was 3+ clear in the stretch and ended up 5+ in front of show finisher Panthera Onca (23-1). Lake Avenue faded to 4th as the overbet favorite. She rode a strong speed bias to victory in the Demoiselle. Mo City was another nose back in 5th and Maedean was a flat 6th. She actually ran a good race against the bias in the Demoiselle, but never picked up her feet in this spot. Persisto faded to last and is clearly overmatched vs. this kind.

Honeybee Stakes (G3) Recap (3-7-20) - Winner: Shedaresthedevil ($7.80)

Ring Leader carved out the fractions as expected but could not see out the two turn trip. Motu and Alta’s Award stalked and moved as a team. The former poked her head in front, but the latter was moving better and was the new target. Shedaresthedevil was lurking inside and behind horses under Joe Talamo, and she came after Alta’s Award in the stretch. The race was on and Shedaresthedevil gamely got past Alta’s Award to score by a bit less than a length. The top two were clear of show finisher Motu. Queen Bridget was 4th and Ring Leader weakened to finish 5th. Raggedy Annie, Fiftyshays Ofgreen, and Turtle Trax trailed.

Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3) Recap (3-8-20) - Winner: Donna Veloce ($2.60)

This was a perfect starting point for Donna Veloce. She broke slow from the rail, and that was a good thing with all of the pace in front of her. Gidgetta, Speech, and Tiz Fake News dueled on the lead and Donna Veloce worked her way outside after stalking on the rail early. Speech put away the other two speed horses but Donna Veloce was hot on her heels and had all the momentum outside. She kicked well clear while under a hand ride and strong hold under Flavien Prat. Speech ran an excellent race to finish a clear 2nd, and Storie Blue rallied to finish a clear 3rd. Paige Anne and Gidgetta were next, and Tiz Fake News was eased in the drive.

Bourbonette Oaks Recap (3-14-20) - Winner: Queen of God ($15.60)

The final time was just average in this all-weather route. Longshot Swanage was intent on the early lead, and strong favorite Laura’s Light was keen to go after her. The latter took over with a couple of furlongs to go but never got much more than a length cushion. Impeccable Style took up the chase and Queen of God was always in a good stalking spot. The latter struck the front and held off late runner Pass the Plate to score by 3/4ths of a length. Impeccable Style held 3rd and Laura’s Light weakened to 4th. Las Ramblas was next, followed by Kay Bee Gee, Baby Karats, Oxum Power, A Wicked Wildcat, Swanage, and Fashion Code.

Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) Recap (3-21-20) - Winner: Bonny South ($14.20)

This should have been a walk in the park for Finite. She had won five straight heading into this contest, and figured to sit a great outside stalking trip in a race without much pace. However, the pace was quicker than expected with French Rose and Stop Shoppin Tammy battling early. Finite sat in a good spot outside the speed, and made a nice wide move to the front in the stretch. Everything went wrong for her after that. Almost as soon as she made the lead, she drifted in and started to weaken. Tempers Rising and Bonny South were on the move from the back of the pack, and the latter gathered all of the outside momentum and secured the victory by 2-1/4 lengths under Florent Geroux. Tempers Rising briefly got to the front but could not go with Bonny South late in a clear runner-up finish. Antoinette outmaneuvered Finite for the show, and it was a good distance back to tired early runners Stop Shoppin Tammy and French Rose.
