Look For These 5 Horses That Can Come Back Stronger During the Fall Del Mar Meet

GOOD BOO JOO (November 4) Three year old filly for Jeff Mullins made her fifth career start on Friday in a maiden special weight affair at six and a half on the turf for Cal bred fillies and mares 3 and up. Breaking from the rail in a field of 7 and off as the 3/2 choice, this was her 1st start with blinkers, and she zipped right to the front and had two on the field by the 3/8 pole. She still had plenty left in the tank when they opened up in the lane and she went on to win by 8 at the wire, and that’s a large amount on the turf. The blinkers made all the difference and this was her 3rd start off a 4 month layoff. She will have no trouble with the first allowance condition and may get a shot at that down at Del Mar. Up the ladder.

RESILIENT (November 5) Five year old gelding for Brian Koriner made just his 3rd career start on Saturday in a first allowance condition sprint at five and a half on the main for Cal breds. Off at 18/1 in a field of 8, he broke a step slow under Herrera, then gathered himself quickly and was third down the back side just two back of the leaders. He got shuffled back on the rail at the 3/8 pole, then re-rallied once again at the 1/8 pole and finished with good interest to get 2nd beaten just a length at the wire. He obviously has some health issues, but this one can run some and has never been worse than 2nd in three trips to the post. If Koriner can keep him in one piece, he’s good enough to knock out this condition, maybe at Los Alamitos.

EARLS ROCK (November 5) Four year old gelding for Phil D’Amato, off since April of 21, came back to the races fit as a fiddle and ran huge in a second allowance condition for older runners at a mile on the turf. Off at 5/2 in a field of 7, this former stakes winner broke well and was third into the clubhouse turn. Vasquez kept him on the fence down the back side saving ground, went after the leaders at the ¼ pole, and then ran huge down the lane to finish third beaten two at the wire and nosed out of second. The winner went wire to wire on the front end. This Irish bred has a lot of talent and has run well in all five career starts. Look for D’Amato to find a winning spot for him in the near future, maybe at Del Mar.

WEEGEE (November 6) Four year old gelding for Jeff Mullins is razor sharp right now and easily won Sunday’s opener, a 9 furlong affair on the turf for older runners in a starter allowance non winners of three. Off as the even money favorite in a field of 7, he lagged early while under a tight hold by Berrios, but was never more than five lengths back of the leaders. He went after the leaders at the ¼ pole going five wide, circled the field and won going away under a hand ride by three. The fractions were extremely slow with a half in 49.75 and ¾ in 1:14.32, yet he still closed without much asking. He’s ready for the first allowance condition right now and has been a superb claim by Mullins.

BUCK OWENS (November 6) Two year old colt for Steve Miyadi made his debut on Sunday in a maiden special weight event for Cal bred maidens at ¾ on the lawn. Off at 15/1 in a full field of 12, he broke OK under Frey and settled in mid pack down the back side. He got shuffled back at the 3/8, then ran on some in the lane to get 4th beaten 5 at the wire. He was pretty much just IN for the race so the connections could see what they have. He looks like a horse that would like two turns and is bred nicely for the turf. Named for the popular country western star, the high percentage Miyadi barn should find a suitable spot for this son of the top grass sire Grazen. Tab and follow.
