Santa Anita Closing Week Recap (June 21-23)

Santa Anita Recap for Friday (6-21-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. There were two front running sprint winners on dirt (4.5f, 6f). The winning turf course running styles were a midpack stalker at five panels, a stalker at one mile, a front runner at five panels, and two more stalkers at one mile (rail at 10 feet).

Hat trick for Victor Espinoza (all three wins at 8T). Carla Gaines saddled a pair of flat mile turf winners and Espinoza rode both.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $90,564 and multiple winning tickets paid $848.76 each. There will be a jackpot carryover of $20,734 when live racing resumes Saturday, June 22.

June 21 Claims: Race 5 - Eric the Trojan ($40k, Jack Carava). Race 6 - Call You Tomorrow ($50k, Brian Koriner).

Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (6-22-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. There were two front running sprint winners on dirt (4.5f, 6,5f). The winning turf course running styles were two last-to-first closers at one mile, a closer at nine furlongs, another closer at one mile, and a front runner at one mile.

Mike Smith booted home a pair.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $197,000 and multiple winning tickets paid $26,309.84 each. There will be a jackpot carryover of $65,837 when live racing resumes Sunday, June 23, and there is a mandatory payout.

Dream of Summer Stakes Recap (6-22-19) - Winner: Starr of Quality ($3.40)

Starr of Quality sure looked like a free bingo square on paper, but she had to work harder than expected to get the job done vs. three opponents. Coco Kisses set the pace and was a stubborn foe. Starr of Quality tracked her and slowly inched away late to win by a length and a half. The aforementioned front runner was clearly second best over Sapphire Kid, and Bella Luma trained throughout.

Snow Chief Stakes Recap (6-22-19) - Winner: Our Silver Oak ($6.00)

Oliver dueled with Lieutenant Dan, and that probably cost the latter the victory. My best bet top choice was patiently ridden from the inside post under Mike Smith, and he swung out in the stretch and rallied for a head victory over an unlucky Irish Heatwave. Lieutenant Dan dug in and held 3rd over Prodigal Son, and they were followed by Desmond Doss, Oliver, Carnivorous, Mobou, and Appreciated. The top three runners all ran quality races, and any of those three could have won this race under the right circumstances.

Wilshire Stakes (G3) Recap (6-22-19) - Winner: Simply Breathless ($12.20)

Ippodamia’s Girl set the pace as expected, and she tried hard throughout but ultimately settled for 4th place. My best bet top choice Ollie’s Candy got the ground saving trip I was expecting, but Simply Breathless had the outside momentum and scored by a length and a quarter. Ollie’s Candy was a neck better than Storm the Hill for 2nd, and following Ippodamia’s Girl in 4th was Don’t Blame Judy, Poster Girl, Achira, Tapped, A Little Bit Me, and Meal Ticket.

June 22 Claims: Race 4 - Diamond Blitz ($25k, Art Sherman), Outlaw ($25k, Vann Belvoir), Royal Insider ($25k, Jack Carava).

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (6-23-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. There were three front running sprint winners on dirt (4.5f, 6.5f, 7f). The winning turf course running styles were an outside presser at five panels, an inside stalker at five furlongs, two closers at one mile, and front runner at a mile and three-quarters.

Riding double for Norberto Arroyo Jr. Training doubles for Phil D’Amato and Mark Glatt.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $1,298,829 and multiple winning tickets paid $70,470.62 each.

Siren Lure Stakes Recap (6-23-19) - Winner: Eddie Haskell ($2.60)

Eddie Haskell looked like a sure winner on paper, but he had to work for it today. Early speed has been strong in these turf sprints, and What’sontheagenda almost stole this one. He had a 2-length lead in the lane but Eddie Haskell kept on coming and prevailed by 3/4ths of a length under Kent Desormeaux. Hard knocking Brandothebartender checked in 3rd, and Tina’s Exchange and Oiseau de Guerre trailed.

American Stakes (G3) Recap (6-23-19) - Winner: Majestic Eagle ($20.00)

This race was thrown wide open after the defection of River Boyne. Sharp Samurai was inexplicably bet down to 1-2. He was a solid contender, but not that solid. Snazzy Dresser and Bombard went out early and both weakened in the stretch. Sharp Samurai stalked the pace but could not muster enough of a response in late stretch and ultimately settled for the show. Majestic Eagle was patiently handled in 5th under Bejarano, and he rallied to win by a neck over Law Abidin Citizen. The winner was an overlay. He was competitive vs. River Boyne in the sophomore stakes ranks last year, and probably should have been closer to 4-1.

Melair Stakes Recap (6-23-19) - Winner: Ruby Bradley ($9.80)

I made Ruby Bradley my top choice because she figured to like two turns, and the others looked suspect over a route of ground. The winner was last of five after a half-mile, and wore down Tiz a Master to score by a 1/2 length. Violet Szabo was best of the rest in 3rd. Beaten favorite Don’t Sell was a weakening 4th, and it was a long way back to Sedamar.

San Juan Capistrano (G3) Recap (6-23-19) - Winner: Acclimate ($21.00)

Acclimate was fast and strong in this turf marathon. He went straight to the front and posted very legit fractions, and was never headed in a game 1/2 length victory over late runner Oscar Dominguez. Red King was best of the rest in 3rd, and was followed by Ya Gotta Wanna, Causeforcommotion, Mongolian Groom, and Ground Attack.

June 23 Claims: Race 1 - Miss Flawless ($50k, Peter Eurton).
