Santa Anita Park Recap for Saturday (1-12-19)

Wet fast (sealed) main track and off the turf. Five front running winners in sprint races (6.5f, 6f, 7f, 6,5f, 6f).

Hat trick for apprentice Heriberto Figueroa. Riding double for Tyler Baze. A pair of training wins for Peter Miller and Doug O誰eill.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $280,473 and multiple winning tickets paid $163.32 each. I gave out the Saturday Rainbow 6. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $798,203 when live racing resumes Sunday.

Jan 12 Claims: Race 1 - Lightning Dove (claim voided). Race 5 - Midnight Soot ($12.5k, Antonio Garcia). Race 7 - Honeymoonz Over ($12.5k, George Papaprodromou).

Las Cienegas Stakes Recap (1-12-19) - Winner: Belvoir Bay

This race was originally scheduled for the downhill course. It was contested at 6.5 furlongs on dirt and there was a four-horse field after scratches. Downhill specialist Belvoir Bay was the post time favorite and she handled the wet track just fine. She pressed front runner Lady Suebee and gradually pulled clear to win by a comfortable length and change under Flavien Prat. Lady Suebee was clearly second best. Compelled rallied to finish a clear 3rd and Painting Corners faded to last.

La Canada (G3) Recap (1-12-19) - Winner: Escape Clause

This was a very weak renewal of the La Canada. Stradella Road and True Royalty dueled on the lead and Escape Clause was parked outside behind those two. The latter shot to the front after six furlongs and widened to win by an easy 5+ lengths under Tyler Baze. New Mexico shipper K P Wildcat was a clear 2nd and my value top choice Lemoona found her best stride in the stretch and landed the show. Stradella Road, Bernina Star, and True Royalty (pulled up/walked off) rounded out the order of finish.

Santa Anita Park Recap for Sunday (1-13-19)

Fast main track and good turf course. Four dueling front running winners on dirt (7f, 6,5f, 8f, 6f). The winning turf course running styles were a front runner at one mile, a closer at one mile, and a front runner down the hill (rail at 30 feet).

Geovanni Franco and Flavien Prat both booted home a pair.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $371,275 and multiple winning tickets paid $18,029.76 each. Unfortunately, I had five out of six on Sunday. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $883,200 when live racing resumes Thursday, Jan. 17.

Jan 13 Claims: Race 2 - Princess Kendra ($12,5k, Doug O誰eill), Ipray ($12.5k, Jeff Metz), Twisted Rosie ($12.5k, Ryan Hanson), Breakaway Dixie ($12.5k, Andrew Lerner). Race 5 - Cimpl Man ($40k, Dan Hendricks). Race 6 - Fortnite Dance (claim voided). Race 7 - Trapalanda ($6250k, Andrew Lerner), Celebrate Life ($6250k, Charles Treece).

Kalookan Queen Recap (1-13-19) - Winner: Spring Lily ($34.80)

This five-horse field was more competitive than most thought. Selcourt was the overwhelming favorite making her first start since a 12th place finish in the Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. She is capable of dominating from start to finish, like she did in this event last year, but Lake Time and Spring Lily were all over her from the opening bell. The latter was my value top choice and she put away Selcourt in the stretch and won by 2-1/4 lengths under Evin Roman. She is trained by John Shirreffs and he is sending out live runners at the current stand. Selcourt was clearly second best and Tyfosha checked in 3rd. Lake Time weakened to 4th and Way to Versailles trailed throughout.
