Buena Vista Stakes (G2) Recap (2-22-20) - Winner: Keeper Ofthe Stars ($74.20)

I feel as though I blundered this one. Jolie Olimpica was the heavy favorite, and I thought she had a decent shot, but was not completely sold on her at less than even money. Sure, she looked good in her US bow, but that was a compact field in a turf sprint stakes. Granted, she won her other three longer starts in Brazil, but that did not mean that she would move forward vs. tougher foes in this spot. Mike Smith took over early aboard the aforementioned chalk, and she was a couple of lengths clear after a half-mile. She maintained her advantage in the stretch but Keeper Ofthe Stars was coming on strong, and the latter prevailed by a 1/2 length. Jolie Olimpica held 2nd by a 1/2 length over my value top pick Mucho Unusual. I picked Keeper Ofthe Stars on top in her last start, but gave her the handicapping heave-ho in this flat mile turf route. I wish I had a mulligan. Lady Prancealot was 4th, and Tiny Tina finished 5th but was demoted to 8th. The remaining entrants were Brill, Meal Ticket, Super Patriot (bothered by Tiny Tina), and La Sardane.

Feb. 22 Claims: Race 1 - Kadesh ($30k, Hector Palma), Royal Suspect ($30k, Bob Hess Jr). Race 4 - Shanghai Barbie ($12.5k, Keith Desormeaux). Race 6 - Rinse and Repeat ($16k, Lorenzo Ruiz). Race 7 - Sunrise Royale ($20k, Peter Miller), Swing Thoughts ($20k, Keith Desormeaux). Race 8 - Jaxon’s Goldie ($30k, Bob Hess Jr).
