Santa Anita Recap Week 2

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running winners on dirt, and all three races were at six furlongs. The winning turf course running styles were a front runner at one mile and a downhill stalker (rail at 30 feet).

Tiago Pereira rode two winners.

January 5 Claims: Race 3 - Princess Dorian ($25k, Reed Saldana). Race 4 - Cats Blame ($40k, Mike Puype). Race 8 - Mischievious Lass ($30k, Mark Glatt).

Emboldened took all of the action and was the easiest of debut winners in today’s third race. The promising 3-year-old filly is trained by Bob Baffert and owned by Godolphin Stables. She completed her six furlong journey in 1:11.16 and is bred to handle added ground, but her final time was okay at best. $40k maiden claimer Caray covered the same distance in 1:10.61 two races later.

Saturday Santa Anita Park Recap: January 6

Fast main track and firm turf course. No front running winners on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were a closer at one mile, a patient runner at nine furlongs, a stalker at nine furlongs, and a downhill stalker.

Rafael Bejarano guided home two winners.

January 6 Claims: Race 1 - Midnight Swinger ($25k, Doug O’Neill). Race 9 - Devil’s Beauty ($16k, David Jacobson).

McKinzie removed blinkers and was a professional winner of the Grade 3 Sham Stakes on Saturday. He patiently stalked outside, cruised up to front runner and eventual runner-up All Out Blitz, and scored by a comfortable 3.5 lengths under Mike Smith. My Boy Jack just outfinished Shivermetimbers for the show and the other two entrants were far back. The winner picked up ten more Derby points for Bob Baffert and will race one or two more times before the first Saturday in May. All Out Blitz was clearly second best and will likely concentrate on one turn events in the near future. My Boy Jack is probably better on turf, and Shivermetimbers seems to have distance limitations.

Itsinthepost was the class of the field and he drove that point home in a convincing 1.25 length tally over Flamboyant in the Grade 2 San Gabriel for turf routers. Editore caught front runner Smokey Image for the show and Isothermended up an okay 5th in a race he desperately needed. Free Rose was next across the line in 6th (needed the race as well), and He Will never fired in a disappointing performance.

Sunday Santa Anita Park Recap: January 7

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (6f, 8.5f). The winning turf course running styles were a downhill stalker, a closer at one mile, and two front runners down the hill (rail at 10 feet).

Joe Talamo rode the early double. Phil D’Amato and Bill Spawr both saddled two winners, with the latter getting a stakes win with Midnight Bisou in the Grade 2 Santa Ynez.

January 7 Claims: Race 3 - Boy Howdy (claim voided, reason vet). Race 5 - Run Like Rhett ($12.5k, Andrew Lerner). Race 6 - Airfoil ($10k, Steve Knapp), Lewys Vaporizor ($10k Blake Heap), Overcomer (claim voided, reason vet). Race 7 - Girl Downstairs ($50k, Mike Puype), Peach Cove ($45k, David Jacobson). Race 9 - Rosie My Rosie ($25k, David Jacobson).

Midnight Bisou hooked subsequent Grade 1 Starlet winner Dream Tree in back-to-back nose defeats to begin her career. She was no ordinary maiden, and now the Bill Spawr runner is a stakes winner after an easy 4+ length triumph in the Grade 2 Santa Ynez. Steph Being Steph outnodded chalk Win the War for the place. The players went a bit overboard on the latter in her first try on conventional dirt. The winner will likely try one mile in the Grade 2 Las Virgenes on Feb 4.
