Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (4-6-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. There were two dueling front running sprint winners on dirt (6f, 6.5f). The winning turf course running styles were a last-to-first closer at a mile and an eighth, a stalker at one mile, a front runner at one mile, a closer at a mile and an eighth, and a closer at one mile.

Three wins for Joel Rosario and Drayden Van Dyke. Riding double for Flavien Prat. Trainer Simon Callaghan saddled two graded stakes winners, and Jerry Hollendorfer saddled a pair of stakes winners as well. Richard Baltas saddled two turf route winners, and Rosario rode both.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $4,536,888 and multiple winning tickets paid $53,312.62. There was a mandatory payout on Saturday, so there is no carryover heading into Sunday.

Evening Jewel Stakes (CA-bred) Recap (4-6-19) - Winner: Sneaking Out ($3.00)

Sneaking Out was best in this stakes sprint for state bred 3-year-old fillies. She chased lively splits, took over in the stretch, and sailed home to win by 2-1/2 lengths under Drayden Van Dyke. Dr Wysong ran a big race to finish a clear 2nd. She was wide from the outside post before finding the inside in midstretch and finishing well for runner-up honors. I like her going forward. Ruby Bradley was a nose better than Violette Szabo for show honors, and they were well clear of the other five entrants.

Santa Anita Oaks (G1) Recap (4-6-19) - Winner: Bellafina ($2.60)

Bellafina was a complete standout in this 4-horse affair, and she won like a favorite should. She pressed outside early under Flavien Prat, surged to the front approaching the stretch, and opened up to win by a very easy 5+ lengths. Flor de La Mar was so impressive in her local sprint debut on a fast track and put her mud debacle behind her with a solid place finish today. Chasing Yesterday could not keep up with the top two and Slewgoodtobetrue was the distant trailer. Bellafina is the strong Kentucky Oaks favorite, and the only thing that could stop her is the nine furlong distance. Flor de La Mar remains a promising sort and could end up being a decent runner for Baffert.

Royal Heroine Stakes (G2) Recap (4-6-19) - Winner: Vasilika ($2.60)

Vasilika is a win machine. She was outstanding last year, and has not missed a beat in 2019. She easily won her third stakes from as many start this year with a comfortable 2+ length tally under Flavien Prat. She can stalk or close and is relentless in the lane. Meal Ticket stalked and completed the exacta at 24-1, and Space Talk-GB checked in 3rd at 41-1. Import Raven痴 Lady-GB was an even 4th, and fading pace players Cordiality and Smoovie were next. Ms Bad Behavior hopped at the start and failed to corner under Mike Smith, and she bore out and pulled up early (walked off). She looked like the controlling speed on paper and was a gem of consistency before today. Smoovie was sent, and everything went wrong for the second betting choice from the opening bell.

Echo Eddie Stakes (CA-bred) Recap (4-6-19) - Winner: Lieutenant Dan ($10.20)

Lieutenant Dan earned this one. He battled through contested fractions throughout and pulled clear to win by a strong 2-1/4 lengths. This was a nice effort. Principe Carlo was also part of the pace and held the place over Listing and beaten favorite Foster Boi. The top four were clear of the other six runners.

Santa Anita Derby (G1) Recap (4-6-19) - Winner: Roadster ($8.20)

Instagrand set the pace as expected, but there was a very good chance that he would not quite see out the distance, and he ended up an okay 3rd (beaten 2+ lengths). Nolo Contesto stalked the pace , made a run for the lead turning for home, and weakened to 4th in the final furlong (5+ lengths behind Instagrand). Not surprisingly, this one came down to the two Baffert runners. Game Winner stalked wide throughout under Joel Rosario and poked his head in front in the lane, but Roadster, patiently ridden by Mike Smith, made the last run and prevailed by a 1/2 length. Synthesis and More Ice trailed. It is on to the Kentucky Derby for the Baffert pair, and both are solid threats on the first Saturday in May. Roadster is versatile and probably has a bit more upside, and the ten furlong distance should not bother him based on his strong finish today.

Providencia (G3) Recap (4-6-19) - Winner: Hostess-GB ($53.00)

Overseas invader Hostess-GB got up in the last jump to defeat her stablemate and my top choice Maxim Rate in this mile and an eighth turf affair for 3-year-old fillies. Lady Prancealot was charging at the end and was another nose back in 3rd, and Lakerball was in the hunt throughout and ended up a solid 4th. Colonial Creed battled on the pace and weakened to 5th, and was followed by Truffalino, Miss Flawless, Apache Princess, Ladymidtown, and Killarney Lass.

Santa Anita Handicap (G1) Recap (4-6-19) - Winner: Gift Box ($6.20)

This looked like a match race on paper and fans were treated to an exciting stretch battle. Prime Attraction set the pace as expected, with Gift Box sitting 2nd and McKinzie tucked in 3rd. The key to this race was the 2+ length separation between the two favorites after six furlongs. Gift Box made the first move, getting the jump on McKinzie, and that enabled him to prevail by a nose over the chalk. The top two ran quality races at a distance beyond their best. Mongolian Groom was up for 3rd at 53-1, and Campaign rallied for last to grab 4th. Prime Attraction faded to 5th and Prince of Arabia trailed.

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (4-7-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. There were three front running winners at six furlongs on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were a stalker at one mile, a front runner at a mile and an eighth, a presser at a mile and an eighth, and a patient runner at one mile (rail at 20 feet).

Three wins for Geovanni Franco and Drayden Van Dyke. Training double for Bob Baffert.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $154,732 and multiple winning tickets paid $1,224.50. There will be a jackpot carryover of $35,423 when live racing resumes Friday, April 12.

Las Flores (G3) Recap (4-7-19) - Winner: Danuska's My Girl ($43.20)

Danuska's My Girl was too quick for her rivals on this day. She took command early and was never threatened in a 3-1/2 length victory under Geovanni Franco. Emboldened rallied from 9th to land the place, and Show It N Moe It stalked and edged Lady Suebee for 3rd. Dream Tree chased and disappointed for the second straight outing as the beaten favorite. Spectator was next, followed by Phantom Proton, Amuse, Moon Kitty, and True Royalty.

April 7 Claims: Race 2 - Conquest Cobra ($25k, Mark Glatt).
