Santa Anita Weekly Report Dec 26 Thru Jan 1

Santa Anita Park Recap for Wednesday (12-26-18)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at seven panels on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were a stalker at a mile and an eighth, a stalker at one mile, a patient runner at one mile, and a stalker at a mile and an eighth.

Riding doubles for Flavien Prat (2 graded wins), Joel Rosario (1 graded win), and Mike Smith (1 graded win). John Sadler saddled two winners and Rosario rode both. Jeff Mullins saddled two turf route stakes winners (Amandine, River Boyne).

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $392,522 and multiple winning tickets paid $1,698.66 each. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $89,864 when live racing resumes Friday, Dec. 28.

Dec 26 Claims: Race 1 - Orchestral ($22.5k, Mike Puype). Race 2 - Come On Kat ($25k, Matthew Chew), Naughty Sophie ($25k, Javier Sierra).

Lady of Shamrock Stakes Recap (12-26-18) - Winner: Amandine

This was a pretty good race for a non-graded affair. Even money favorite Ms Bad Behavior set the pace as expected and Stradella Road pestered her throughout. Second betting choice Amandine sat a great stalking trip from the rail, took over in midstretch, and was much the best at the end. As always, Ms Bad Behavior tried hard throughout and would not let Stradella Road take the place from her. Overseas invader Love and Peace broke slow from the outside post and was late on the scene for 4th. Streak of Luck was a wide, stalking 5th and was followed by X S Gold, West Palm Beach, and Animosity.

Grade I La Brea Stakes Recap (12-26-18) - Winner: Spiced Perfection

The betting public thought this was a cake walk for Dream Tree, but not so fast. The Bob Baffert trainee missed the BC Filly & Mare Sprint because of a throat issue and only had four published workouts for this. She was hustled along early after a slow beginning and quickly retreated to last after hanging in there for a 1/2 mile. My razor sharp value top Spiced Perfection may have won this at the post position draw. She sat a great outside stalking trip as expected and defeated fellow California-bred Hot Autumn, with Baffert’s other entrant Emboldened checking in 3rd. Inside pace player Happy Like a Fool was clear of the rest in 4th, and Heavenhasmynikki, Kelly’s Humor, Cathedral Reader, and Dream Tree completed the order of finish.

Grade II Mathis Brothers Mile Recap (12-26-18) - Winner: River Boyne

River Boyne was the paper race winner, but it is no fun playing low odds favorites. I went with Desert Stone as my value top choice at 10-1, and he did everything but win. The pace was contested as expected, and River Boyne was the first late runner to attack, which ended up being the key to victory. The strong favorite ran his Santa Anita turf record to 6-for-6 in his head victory over surging closer Desert Stone, with frequent purse nibbler Combatant another 1/2 length back in 3rd. Fight On rallied from last to complete the superfecta, and was followed by Gidu, Shivermetimbers, Hardboot, Choo Choo, Snazzy Dresser, and Gemonteer.

Grade II San Antonio Stakes Recap (12-26-18) - Winner: Gift Box

There was nothing wrong with favorites Battle of Midway and Dabster, but Gift Box was just as fast as those two on paper and was being offered at a generous 6-1. Outclassed longshot Pitino figured to set the pace from the rail, and Battle of Midway and Dabster chased him from the outside. Meanwhile, Gift Box was perched behind those three under Joel Rosario. Pitino quickly faded out of contention after six panels, and it was a 3-horse battle after that. Gift Box was making his first start since March, and he was plenty fit for his new trainer John Sadler. He wore down Battle of Midway to win by a 1/2 length, and Dabster was less than a length behind those two while well clear of the rest in 3rd. Beach View, Sonneteer, Air Strike, Yulong Warrior, Tatters to Riches, and Pitino completed the order of finish.

Grade I Malibu Stakes Recap (12-26-18) - Winner: McKinzie

We have been waiting for a wow performance from the sophomore males since Justify swept the Triple Crown. It took more than seven months and we finally got to see a potential 2019 star emerge from the 3-year-old male class. McKinzie was the 7-2 morning line favorite but there was no way he would be offered at that generous price. He was hammered down to 6-5 and he rallied from near the back of the pack from post 13 to power home by 4+ lengths in a visually impressive effort. He left no doubt that he was best in an authoritative performance for Mike Smith and Bob Baffert. There were five horses across the line for the minor awards, and Identity Politics (Chad Brown) rallied to grab the place over 45-1 longshot Still Having Fun, Axelrod, Bobby’s Wicked One, and inside pacesetter Calexman. Behind them were Nero, Kanthaka, Solomini, Majestic Dunhill, Copper Bullet, Ax Man, Greyvitos, and Seven Trumpets.

Santa Anita Park Recap for Friday (12-28-18)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (8f, 6f). The winning turf course running styles were a stalker at a mile and an eighth, a downhill presser, a front runner at nine panels, and a dueling front runner at one mile (rail at 20 feet).

Riding triple for apprentice Heriberto Figueroa including Bob and Jackie in the Eddie Logan Stakes. Doug O’Neill saddled two winners.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $170,823 and multiple winning tickets paid $6,083.50 each. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $128,973 when live racing resumes Saturday, Dec. 29.

Dec 28 Claims: Race 3 - Don’t Stalk Me ($12.5k, Doug O’Neill). Race 5 - One Upper (claim voided, reason vet). Race 9 - Hard Arch ($8k, Genaro Vallejo), Dukes Up ($8k, Mark Glatt), Broken Up ($8k, Vann Belvoir).

Eddie Logan Stakes Recap (12-28-18) - Winner: Bob and Jackie

There was not much drama in this race. Bob and Jackie battled on the lead early, took over after a half-mile, and held safe to win by a length over strong favorite Rijeka. The latter rallied to finish a clear 2nd under Joel Rosario. More Ice was up for 3rd and was followed by The Creep, Weekly Call, Sparky Ville (did not care for turf), Swamp Souffle, and Manhattan Up (pulled up/walked off).

Santa Anita Park Recap for Saturday (12-29-18)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running winners on dirt (6f, 6.5f, 6f). The winning turf course running styles were a last-to-first winner at a mile and an eighth, a front runner at nine furlongs, a last-to-first winner at ten panels, and a front runner down the hill.

Riding doubles for Rafael Bejarano, Edwin Maldonado, and Joel Rosario. Trainer Doug O’Neill saddled two dirt sprint winners.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $296,889 and multiple winning tickets paid $4,173.64 each. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $196,943 when live racing resumes Sunday, Dec. 30.

Dec 29 Claims: Race 3 - Naomi Fraley (claim voided). Race 5 - Papa Turf ($8k, Brian Koriner), Boy Howdy ($8k, Kristin Mulhall), Monterey Shale ($8k, Jeff Metz). Race 6 - Saratoga Morning ($25k, Doug O’Neill), Treasure Hunter ($25k, Hector Palma). Race 10 - Madaket Sunset ($50k, Doug O’Neill), Storming Lady ($50k, Alfredo Marquez).

Grade 3 Robert Frankel Stakes Recap (12-29-18) - Winner: Fahan Mura

Fahan Mura is a front running win machine at Santa Anita Park, and she won again at a distance beyond her best in this nine furlong affair. She shot straight to the front as expected under Edwin Maldonado, and she was in complete control throughout. She was at least a couple of lengths in front for much of the running before crossing the line a bit less than a length to the good over Excellent Sunset. The latter broke a bit awkwardly from the outside post before settling into a wide stalking trip under Rafael Bejarano. She was getting to the winner late but the score was already settled at that point. If the runner-up drew a better post and was able to chase the winner from 2nd, she might have gone past her. The top two ran well. Quebec took up chasing duties under Joel Rosario and was clear of the rest in 3rd in a solid performance throughout. Escape Clause rallied from the back to outfinish Amboselli for 4th. Lucy De, Gliding By, and Sweet Charity trailed.

Grade 1 American Oaks Recap (12-29-18) - Winner: Competitionofideas

This was one of those long distance races without a true front runner, and when that situation presents itself on turf, the best finisher usually wins. 90-1 bomber K P Pergolicious took up the running with Amandine chasing her throughout. Nobody was moving from the back of pack except for Competitionofideas, and Joel Rosario gave her a perfect ride from the outside post. She was taken back and angled in early while content to trail for the first mile or so. After that she angled out wide, rallied boldly in the stretch, and finished full of run to win going away by 2+ lengths. Chad Brown has another turf star in his barn. K P Pergolicious was a head better than Amandine for 2nd. The latter just won the Lady of Shamrock Stakes on Dec. 26 and ran a big race on very short rest in this spot. Colonia, Paved, Princess Warrior, beaten favorite Californiagoldrush, and Retro trailed.

Santa Anita Park Recap for Sunday (12-30-18)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running winners on dirt (6f, 8f, 6.5f). The winning turf course running styles were a patient runner down the hill, a stalker at one mile, an inside presser at one mile, and another patient runner down the hill (rail at 20 feet).

Flavien Prat and Richard Baltas teamed up for three wins (2 on turf).

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $300,853 and multiple winning tickets paid $6,136,46 each. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $265,821 when live racing resumes Monday, Dec. 31.

Dec 30 Claims: Race 1 - Artie B Good ($50k, Alfredo Marquez), Move Over ($50k, Hector Palma). Race 2 - Portal Creek ($20k, Robert Hess Jr.), Secret Maneuver (claim voided). Race 3 - Red Shelby ($25k, Jerry Hollendorfer). Race 5 - Gain Ground ($16k, Robert Hess Jr.), Elwood J ($16k, Jeff Metz). Race 7 - Arno’s Mane Man ($16k, Steve Miyadi). Race 8 - Cordiality ($62.5k, Peter Miller).

Blue Norther Stakes Recap (12-30-18) - Winner: Giza Goddess

The pace figured to be honest and there was a very high probability that there would not be a front running winner in this event. Courteous tried to go all the way but was forced to go too fast early and faded to 5th. Colonial Creed took up chasing duties under Rafael Bejarano but Brice Blanc and Giza Goddess were not going to let her get the jump, and they made a decisive winning move after six furlongs. Colonial Creed came after her again but it was too late and she fell a 1/2 length short. Post time favorite Lady Prancealot was stuck in traffic in the stretch and ran down the middle to just miss the show (Thriving was 3rd). She would have been 3rd with a different trip but was disappointing nonetheless. Splashy Kisses, Cedars of Lebanon, and Data Storm Kitty trailed.

Santa Anita Park Recap for Monday (12-31-18)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One dueling front running winner at one mile on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were two patient runners at one mile, a presser down the hill, and a patient runner at nine furlongs (rail at 10 feet).

Heriberto Figueroa and Joe Talamo both booted home a pair.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $249,974 and multiple winning tickets paid $48,909.24 each. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $323,045 when live racing resumes Tuesday, January 1.

Dec 31 Claims: Race 1 - Hot American ($25k, Ryan Hanson). Race 2 - Second Fiddle (claim voided).

Santa Anita Park Recap for Tuesday (1-1-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at one mile on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were two stalkers at one mile and two late running winners down the hill.

A pair of flat mile turf wins for Flavien Prat. Two dirt sprint victories for Drayden Van Dyke.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $320,286 and multiple winning tickets paid $24,441.62 each. There will be a Pick 6 jackpot carryover of $396,370 when live racing resumes Friday, January 4.

Jan 1 Claims: Race 3 - Bunny Yogurt ($16k, Gary Sherlock). Race 5 - Zorich ($50k, Mark Glatt). Race 6 - Ike Walker ($40k, Jeff Mullins), Very Very Stella ($40k, Jeff Bonde). Race 9 - Princess Kendra ($8k, Steve Knapp).

Joe Hernandez Stakes Recap (1-1-19) - Winner: Caribou Club

The pace figured to be fast and contested and Conquest Tsunami looked like the speed of the speed on paper. That is how in played out in real time as well. Conquest Tsunami shook off early pressure from Cistron and was a length in front for much of the running. He was forced to go too fast early to secured the early lead (20.92 for 1/4 and 42.10 for 1/2) and strong favorite Stormy Liberal was on the move, along with late runner Caribou Club. The latter had all of the momentum and swept past them to win by a length and a quarter under Joe Talamo. Stormy Liberal settled for runner-up honors and Conquest Tsunami was best of the rest in 3rd. Cistron just held 4th and was followed by Law Abidin Citizen, Calculator, Pubilius Syrus, and Afleet Ascent.
